As a means of complementing government efforts at mitigating hunger occasioned by the current Coronavirus pandemic in Ebonyi State, a humanitarian group, De Norsemen Club International has donated over 100 bags of 5kg rice, 100 cartons of noodles among others to Onicha Local Government area.
Presenting the donation at the Council Headquarters on Monday, the South-East Zonal Director of the club, Comrade Okenwa Uka, said the idea behind the gesture is to reach out to the most vulnerable and the poorest of the poor in the area.
The group noted that both Coronavirus pandemic and its attendant aftermath, especially hunger were capable of killing, adding that the two should be treated with equal amount of seriousness.
According to Uka, the idea behind the gesture was to assist both the federal and the state governments in what they were doing to arrest the virus, and to mitigate its effects on the lives of poor Nigerians and Ebonyians in particular.
The group commended both the Federal and Ebonyi State Governments on their efforts to ensure the Coronavirus pandemic, currently ravaging the globe, was contained.
Uka revealed that the organisation had set up an Anti-COVID-19 Committee to sensitise the masses on the need to heed the precautionary measures spelt out by the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control, the federal government and other partner agencies.
Uka explained: “The leadership of the club in Ebonyi State thought it wise to set up Anti-COVID-19 Committee, just like the State and Federal Government, in order to ensure that it reaches out to the most vulnerable public in the society.
“The idea is to sensitise the people on the need to take heed to the precautionary measures of Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and that of the state government, because it’s he who stays alive that can tell story of how he was able to conquer the virus.
“Having looked at the situation in the country, our club thought it wise to take this bold step in order to visit local government areas in Ebonyi State.
“Today we are in Onicha, tomorrow we will be in another Council area… “
He further commended the synergy existing between the traditional rulers in the Council area and the Chairman of the Council, Felix Igboke, describing it as the secret behind the ingenuity and great achievements of the Chairman.
He added that the token was meant to further encourage the Council Boss over all he had been doing to alleviate the people’s sufferings within this pandemic period.
Receiving the items on behalf of the Chairman, the Coordinator of Onicha Development Centre, Chima Ude-Umanta, thanked the Club for their kind gesture.
He noted that other good spirited individuals from the local government area have been making donations in one way or the other towards helping the people at this period of health crisis.
Ude-Umanta added: “The idea is to support what both the Federal Government and State Governments are doing, in the fight against the Coronavirus.
“This is awesome of this group.
“Our traditional rulers, you people have seen what they brought and, in their words, they said because they met you people here, they would leave here with blessings.
“So, shower them with your blessings.
“All of us will bless this club on behalf of our Executive Chairman, who is unavoidably absent because of an assignment he attended somewhere.”
