NGO partners AMAC to clear dump sites, sensitizes on menace of open-defecation

The Founder and Chief Executive of a non-governmental organization (NGO) ‘The Number Two Initiative for a Healthy Environment’, Hajiya Fati Eryaye Abubakar, has called on government at all levels, corporate organizations as well as other NGOs to join hands in eradicating the menace of open-defecation and plastic pollution at various communities.
She made this call on Thursday, September 24, when she visited Pigba Sama Community, near Apo Mechanic Village, Abuja, in company of the Head of Department, Environmental Services of Abuja Municipal Area Council (AMAC), Sanitarian Haruna Ahmed; Deputy Head of Department, Mr. Abba Muazu and Principal Environmental Health Officer, Mr. Vincent Leo who took her round the community to see all the illegal dump sites.
Having seen the various dump sites, Hajiya Fati Eryaye Abubakar promised to send truck immediately to evacuate them without any cost on the part of the community.
Speaking with AljazirahNigeria on the workings of her NGO, she said, “We are selecting one community from each of the six area councils in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT). We go round to collect dirt; the ones for recycling we send them to recycling companies and the ones that are to be disposed off, we send them to Abuja Environmental Protection Board (AEPB), and if it is something we can just disposed off a community, we do that as well. The aim is to make sure the place is clean.
“We do a lot of sanitization; we go round communities to sensitize them on the dangers of open defecation and plastic pollution; mostly on open defecation. We collaborate with government to provide for the people places where they can dispose their refuse.
“Like now, we are at Pigba Community, we want to come here to clear all the debris, but at the same time we will like the government to provide for them where they can put those refuse, because if you clear it, it will definitely come back. You have to create for them where they can dispose off their refuse properly”.
On how they generate revenue to fund their activities, Hajiya Fati said, “For now, we are funding ourselves, but we are reaching out to governments, private sectors, other NGOs, international communities, because this fight is for all of us. The government cannot do it alone, but they should try to support those of us that are making efforts in these areas”.
In his response, the village head of Pigba Sama, Chief James Zakwoyi Dogo and the chairman of Pigba Environmental Taskforce, Mr. Moses Danladi Adayilo thanked the NGO and AMAC Environmental Services for coming to the aid of the community especially as there are already dump sites that the community alone does not have the resources to handle.
