IPCR expresses worries over election violence

In their efforts to curtail the incessant irregularities in the country’s election processes which often results to violence of different kinds, the Director General, Institute for Peace and Conflict Resolution (IPCR), Abuja Dr.

Dr. Bakut who was represented by a Deputy Director in the organization Mr. Dauda Henry made this known while delivering a welcome address at a 2- day Post election dialogue for stakeholders held at New Keffi Hotel in Nasarawa State yesterday, lamented how prior to 2019 general elections several deaths were recorded.

According to him, days before the 2019 general elections three electoral offices containing voting materials in Abia, Anambra and Plateau states were burnt down, which he said INEC officials considered as an attempt to sabotage the electoral process in the country.

His words: “It is in the light of this that the programme is designed to dialogue with relevant stakeholders in order to understand the dynamics and perspectives of election related conflicts, particularly, the post-election conflict.

“We want to increase among participants an understanding for the relevance of dialogue and proffer solutions to the challenges anticipated in electoral processes including issues of intra-party democracy”.

He continued: “The programme’s activities would include the engagements of 40 participants representing political parties, chief security officers, media, women groups, youth groups, security agencies and other relevant stakeholders. There is a growing agreement that there is a need to dialogue on how best to prepare for the 2023 election”.

Goodwill messages were given by the Christian Association of Nigeria, National Orientation Agencies, Trade Unions of Nigeria, Women Wing of Christian Association of Nigeria among others.

Highlights of the workshop included presentation on dialogue on peaceful elections, 1st and 2nd plenary sessions and group photograph.
