Twenty-seven members of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafria, IPOB, have been arrested during Operation Mesa by troops of the 144 Battalion, 82 Division of the Nigeria Army, Enugu.
They were arrested on October 1, when Nigeria was celebrating its independence as a sovereign nation.The military said the suspects numbered 27 comprising of 23 males and four females while an AK-47 rifle was recovered from one of them named Oliver Onyebunachi somewhere in Imo State.
This revelation was made in a statement by the Army Operations Media Coordinator, Colonel Aminu Iliyasu. According to him, the Chief of Army Staff, Lt. Gen. Tukur Buratai had ordered army formations and unit commanders to continue with their operations across Nigeria.
The statement quoted Iliyasu as saying, “One of the suspects was shot in his right leg as he tried to shoot at own troops. Normalcy has since been restored in that area as troops continued to maintain surveillance in the general area.
“The Chief of Army Staff hereby solicits the support of our citizens in availing the army units and formations nationwide with timely information that will assist them in ridding the communities of criminal elements.”
